US and UK Celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day Anniversary

On October 1st, Nigeria marked its 64th Independence Day anniversary, a momentous occasion celebrated not only within the West African nation but also across the globe. Notably, the United States and the United Kingdom extended their heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria, recognising its achievements and the enduring bonds shared with the nation.

The United States Congratulates Nigeria

In a statement released on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed the United States’ warm wishes to Nigeria on its Independence Day. “On behalf of the United States of America, I extend our congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 64th anniversary of your independence,” Blinken said.

Blinken praised Nigeria for its resilience and dynamism, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in Africa. He also emphasised the strong partnership between the two nations, stating, “Our partnership is built on mutual respect, shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and a commitment to fostering peace, prosperity, and security.”

Additionally, Blinken reiterated the United States’ intention to deepen its cooperation with Nigeria, focusing on areas such as inclusive economic development, energy access, democracy, human rights, and environmental sustainability. “I look forward to our continued collaboration to advance our shared goals and tackle global challenges in the year to come,” he said.

The United Kingdom’s Message to Nigeria

The United Kingdom also extended its congratulations to Nigeria. In a message shared by the British Embassy on X (formerly Twitter), the UK recognised its long-standing relationship with Nigeria. “We join His Majesty The King in congratulating the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The UK further acknowledged the special bond between the two nations, particularly within the context of the Commonwealth. “The UK and Nigeria share a special bond along with the Commonwealth, and we wish all Nigerians, as well as those in the UK, a Happy Independence Day.”

Celebrations in the UK

The celebrations for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day extended beyond Nigeria’s borders, with several towns in the UK commemorating the occasion. In areas such as Barking & Dagenham, Leeds, Doncaster, Rochdale, Bristol, and Croydon, the Nigerian flag was proudly flown outside town halls as a symbol of unity and respect for the Nigerian community.

These towns will also host small receptions where local mayors are expected to deliver speeches honouring their Nigerian residents and recognising their contributions to the local community. These gestures reflect the significant presence of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK and the important role it plays in strengthening the ties between the two countries.

A Strengthened Relationship for the Future

As Nigeria celebrates 64 years of independence, the messages from both the United States and the United Kingdom underline the importance of their diplomatic and cultural relationships with the country. Both nations are committed to deepening their cooperation with Nigeria on various fronts, including economic development, democracy, human rights, and environmental sustainability.

The shared history between Nigeria, the United States, and the United Kingdom continues to evolve, built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous future. As Nigeria looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, these strong international partnerships will play a vital role in shaping its path.
